There are so many places to visit in North Northumberland
and the Scottish Borders, we cannot list them all here.
We give you a welcome pack on arrival, that will provide
you with all the information you need to enjoy this part of
the country to the full. You may wish to visit secretkingdom.com
a web site devoted to Northumberland.
Berwick-Upon-Tweed
The historic border town, famous for its walled fortifications
and the fact that it has changed hands between England and
Scotland thirteen times! As well as many places of historical
interest, Berwick has a fine shopping centre with high street
shops, specialist shops, superstores, and a twice weekly market.
Golden Beaches
The beaches on the North Northumberland coast are first class.
There is a small beach at Spittal complete with an amusement
centre and services, but the main beaches starting at Cocklawburn
and Goswick stretch for miles and are unspoiled by commercialism.
Fishing
Sea fishing trips from Berwick harbour can be booked easily.
Permits can be obtained for fresh water fishing on the Tweed
or its estuaries.
The Scottish Borders
Berwick-Upon-Tweed is rightly called the ‘Gateway to
the Borders’ and is the perfect centre for visiting
the host of interesting places and beautiful countryside in
the Scottish Borders. The Scottish Borders are just a few
minutes from Berwick by car; Edinburgh a mere 45 minute train
ride away.
Castles
There are numerous historic castles and houses in Northumberland
and the Borders, many around the area of Berwick. These include
the famous Alnwick Castle (where the Harry Potter movies were
filmed), Norham Castle,
Bamburgh Castle, Floors Castle, Mellerstain and many more.
Ford & Etal estates
A miniature steam railway runs from Heatherslaw, with its
working mill and museum, to the picturesque village of Etal,
with its thatched cottages.
The Cheviot Hills
Half an hour’s drive from Berwick are the breath-taking
Cheviot Hills and the National Park. Many footpaths and bridleways
lead you to some of the most spectacular view points in the
country. The Cheviots straddle the Borders and are a favourite
retreat. Streams form a perfect setting for a family picnic.
Holy Island (Lindisfarne)
A tiny island that is cut off from the mainland at high tide,
famous for its Christian history, wildlife and outstanding
natural beauty. There is a winery (with free mead tasting)
and many gift shops.
The Maltings Arts Theatre (Berwick)
The Maltings offers year round entertainment for all the
family, with its exciting programme of music, drama, dance
and comedy. It has a fully licensed restaurant, a 300-seat
theatre and a theatre bar.
Golf
There are a number of courses (links and a driving range
are included) to test your skills. Nine or eighteen-hole courses
are available.
Sustrans Cycle Route
The coast and castle cycle route passes through Berwick-upon-Tweed.
From South Shields to Edinburgh this route offers cyclists
the opportunity to experience spectacular countryside.
Leisure Centre & Swimming Pool
The modern 'Swan Centre' complex with its comprehensive leisure
centre and swimming pool (with wave machine
and flume), is situated within easy reach of the park - just
1 1/2 miles away.
